Healthy Gums throughout pregnancy too

Approximately 30 to 100% of pregnant women suffer from gingivitis during their pregnancy.
The reason for this is the hormone level changes that occur in the body. Due to the increased production of the hormone progesterone the vascular tissue of the gums and the mucous membrane of the mouth is enlarged and therefore pervious to the toxin produced by plaque bacteria. Additionally there is indication that particularly women with typ-1 diabetes are at a higher risk for inflammation of the gums than pregnant women without diabetes.
The prevention of gingivitis is especially important because the inflammatory procedure, without the necessary attention to mouth hygiene, can stretch the support system of the tooth itself which then can result in parodontisis with an irreversible disintergration of the connective tissue and bones.

Time and again discussions take place as to whether parodontisis can be connected to premature births and to low birth weight.

Regular and individually prescribed prophylactic control is highly recommended throughout pregnancy.
