Tooth-coloured Composite Fillings
and Ceramic Inlays

We offer two alternative options for treating defects arising from dental decay in the posterior teeth region.
For small defects and especially for the anterior region we recommend the composite filling, which consists of a plastic base and is therefore also known as the plastic filling. As there is almost always a composite colour corresponding to every colour of tooth, it is nearly always possible to make a perfect cosmetic match of the filling to the tooth.

While plastic is an excellent substance for the anterior region and for smaller defects surrounded by the tooth's substance, its use for large fillings, which go deep into the interdentium of the posterior teeth, can be problematic. It is virtually impossible to create a tight seal around the filling here. A further problem with large fillings is wear and instability of the softer material which, with continuous use of the teeth, quickly leads to signs of wear, discolouration and marginal leakage.

The lifetime of extensive composite fillings is therefore limited to approx. 3-7 years. In such cases consideration should be given to the provision of a lasting, stable alternative to the composite through ceramic inlays made in the laboratory. Ceramic inlays are excellent when it comes to precision matching, offer optimum stabilisation - even for teeth which have become greatly weakened - and are also extremely aesthetically pleasing and durable.
