Conservative Dentistry

We can offer you different alternatives when it comes to fillings for posterior teeth and molars. If the patient wants to preserve the natural look, i.e. the tooth's natural colour and shine, there are two different materials to choose from; dental care with high-quality composite or ceramic fillings.

For small defects, and especially for the anterior region, we recommend the composite filling, which consists of a polymer base and is therefore also known as the plastic filling. As there is almost always a composite colour corresponding to every colour of tooth, it is nearly always possible to make a perfect cosmetic match of the filling to the tooth.

While plastic is an excellent substance for the anterior region and for smaller defects surrounded by the tooth's substance, its use in back teeth for large fillings going deep into the gum can be problematic. It is virtually impossible to create a tight seal around the filling here. Another problem with large fillings is the wear and tear and the inconsistency of the softer material which, because of continuous use by the teeth, can quickly lead to signs of abrasion, discolouration and marginal leakage.

The lifetime of extensive composite fillings is therefore limited to approx. 3 - 7 years.

In such cases consideration should be given to the provision of a lasting, stable alternative to the composite offered by ceramic inlays made in the laboratory. Ceramic inlays are excellent when it comes to precision matching, offer optimum stabilisation - even for those teeth which have become considerably weakened - and are also extremely aesthetically pleasing and durable.
