Full ceramic crowns
(porcelain crowns)

A crown is always indicated if a tooth is badly broken and a reconstruction with a filling, inlay or veneer is no longer possible. There are several types of crowns. The most-used are the porcelain-fused-to metal crown and the full ceramic crowns.

The former consist of a metal base (gold alloy) with a veneer of ceramic on the outside. Full ceramic crowns consist purely of porcelain, and are preferable to the metal-fused-to-porcelain crown in the visible areas and the areas where aesthetics are important because they achieve a clearly more perfect cosmetic final result.

They stand out because of their excellent aesthetics and because the transparency (translucence) and light reflection of the crown are virtually the same as with natural teeth. A further advantage of the metal-free construction is the tooth-coloured edge which guarantees an invisible transition to the gum. With traditional crowns it is often difficult to avoid a dark shadow along the gum line.
